The African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) is a rela'vely unknown interna'onal jurisdic'on that was established in 2006 to complement and strengthen the func'ons of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights.
The latest of the regional human rights courts, its Statute is largely inspired by the models of the European and Inter-American Courts of Human Rights.
The establishment of the ACHPR marks a decisive step in Africa and has been widely welcomed by all human rights defenders.
Since its establishment, the Court has encountered many difficul'es (planned merger with the Court of Jus'ce of the African Union, reluctance of States to grant it compulsory jurisdic'on, compe''on from other jurisdic'ons, etc.).
However, this has not prevented it from issuing a number of decisions, some of which may have been landmark decisions in recent years.
The aim of the Conference is to review the ac'vity of the ACHPR while looking ahead to its future.
